Villapuram(Road opp. to little diamond school)
A recently-opened maker space in the city welcomes anyone with a desire to create, offering workshops, material and community-building
The sharing of similar passions to create something larger is always a welcome initiative. So, naturally, it’s a boon when a new space in the city encourages like-minded people to come together to share scientific knowledge and indulge in collaborative projects for minimalcost or free depends cause.
Titled J@y@vill@ , the spot is a hub for tech enthusiasts and the perpetually restless who yearn to create and build. The brainchild of Shiva, who wears several hats including Tech-educator, MCA graduate and cyber Security Consultant, the maker space is an extension of Madurai Open Tech Club, which has been running tech and hackathon workshops across city since 2013.
Children and adults alike are welcome to \
attend a Two-hour workshop every Saturday by experts in Technology,Startups, robotics,IoT,, electronics, origami, making paper planes and even programming. This is followed by a couple of hours dedicated to serious creation. “Since most schools and offices are closed on weekends, we thought why not start a ‘once-a-week’ maker space so more people can get access to a community of makers who come together and find solutions to local challenges,” explains Shiva. So every weekend, a nondescript office space belonging to the TiFiT transforms into a rather fascinating environment.
We are young, we are new and we are a Coworking Space! J@y@vill@ caters to start-ups/SMEs/freelancers who are looking for a contemporary office space.
What is a Coworking Space?
A “community of working professionals” is a Co-Working Space. Often start-ups, SME’s or freelancers work in such a place. It is an alternative style of working where one can be sitting next to a person from a totally different firm or a freelancer with different ideas and thought processes. The spaces itself are designed to be interactive and social.
Why Coworking Spaces?
A coworking space is a melting pot of diverse people with various skills and professional networks. It is an exciting synergy to see when people come together and merely start talking to each other – while working independently for themselves as well!
Many working professionals face boredom and distractions at home. Coworking spaces offers a solution to the problem of isolation and in turn help businesses grow by helping people to connect and network with peers who will help motivate and even create opportunities.
“Coworking spaces help businesses succeed”. Period.
J@y@vill@ is in a way Madurai’s first Coworking & Co-living Space which is very contemporary in style but keeping in mind the corporate requirements even for a start-up. As at the end of the day whoever it is, one would like to host clients or even have a presentation/event at their own office space.
We had some of the brightest minds put our space together.
The location itself of the space is something we feel is a great add-on for our clients. You are surrounded by some of the best restaurants, cafes and bars in the city. We have exclusive deals for you in those as well.

J@y@vill@ is a space that allows entrepreneurs to focus just on work
An initiative by two young entrepreneurs, Lakshmi and Shiva, J@y@vill@ offers women a space to work out of, uninterrupted by a million chores.
Says Shiva, “Lakshmi and I have been running an Testing & Digital Marketing Firm for the last couple of years and, for the last six months, we’d been extensively working out of coffee shops. Factors such as rent and down payment to rent an office space proved a hindrance. That’s how this idea came about. We realized the importance of a co-working space for entrepreneurs with a limited budget, who have to choose between hiring well or paying a hefty rent.”
Co-working spaces might be a dime a dozen, but what J@y@vill@ aims to do is a create an entire eco-system for women entrepreneurs.
“We have everything from concierge services to tie-ups with home cooks to deliver food for those who want it. Women working out of here can also opt to have beauty services and even yoga classes. For busy mothers, we’re in talks with day care centres close-by, so they can drop their children there before coming to work and also monitor their child via video. Women can also choose to have their groceries delivered here, so when they go home after work, they are free from chores. There’s 24×7 security and power backup too,” says Shiva, adding, “The idea is to encourage women, especially those who had to quit their jobs due to other commitments or pregnancy, to pick up the thread once again.”
J@y@vill@ will also have workshops during weekends that will range from financial planning and self-defence to DIY crafts.
With another centre set to launch in Madurai next quarter, the founders are looking at setting up around four centres across the city by the year-end, and also expand to cities such as Bengaluru and Pondichery soon.
“We currently have daily, monthly and flexi passes for those looking to rent the space. The price ranges from ₹200 to ₹ 4,000,” says Shiva.
